Overwatch 2 - Powder Keg Mine

Powder Keg Mine is one of two payload race maps that shipped for Stadium in season 18. It was designed by Thomas Mountfort with concepts by Airborn Studios. I was the only dedicated in-house environment artist on this map and did the asset folders and layers setup. Using the art kit from Route 66, I constructed the backdrop, modeled the ground and the exteriors of all the buildings, assembled the interiors out of modular kit, and did the set dressing.

Lighting was done by Mike Hardison, FX by Hoshiko Oyamatsu, sound by Joe Concha, and Nina Petchprapa and Alina Alikhanyan were our map tech artists. We also partnered with Room 8 who made the buildings in the backdrop, the pinboard alcove, and the mines lift.
For this map and Thames District we wanted to bring in more character lore than we’ve seen on previous Stadium maps. Powder Keg centers on the Deadlock Gang as they take refuge in an abandoned gold mine somewhere in Utah while preparing for their biggest heist yet. Look out for nods to Ashe, Bob, and a character or two we haven’t seen yet. Big thank you to Jude Stacey for providing narrative consultation.

All Overwatch maps are a group effort. Major thanks to lead 3D artist Phil Wang and associate AD Peter Lee for their excellent art direction and guidance, and as ever to the incredible Overwatch team.
