For Dragonflight I was point exterior environment artist on the Azure Span zone. Points represent the team in cross-disciple meetings and act as a link between art direction, level design, and the artists themselves. The tundra biome in particular was my baby and I designed and made most of the plant models and ground textures. In addition to plants I also did exterior lighting, particulate volume placement, and detail doodads (our name for small ground cover like grass).
Typically ground textures in WoW follow a pattern where the tops of mounds are the lightest-colored and the crevasses darkest. For this zone we got to break with tradition and have a patchwork quilt of reds and yellows which was really fun. Splashes of red or yellow create little sub-pockets within the zone.
Big thanks to Kate McKee, Gus Schmidt, and Kelli Hoover who all did a ton of heavy lifting in this zone. Gabe Gonzalez did the key art.
