Overwatch 2 - Antarctic Peninsula

I was very fortunate to join the Overwatch 2 team last April, where the first map I contributed to creatively was season three’s Antarctic Peninsula. I was responsible for taking our existing rock and ice pieces and fleshing them out into a more robust kit that could be used to build massive ice caves. I also made the larger bespoke rock cliffs and ice structures.

Many environment artists touched this map, including but not limited to Molly Warner, Justin McMillan, Peter Tran, Tim Wasson, Phil Wang, and our partners at Airborn. Unending thanks to Lucas Annunziata and Helder Pinto for their feedback and guidance.

I made the ice caves that flank the icebreaker ship. The spawn rooms (not pictured) were made by Tim Wasson.

As you might imagine, the caves utilize a lot of vertex blending and edge decals to look good. I’m not responsible for our rad ice shader but I made the ice textures

I made the dripping snow tileable and built the backdrop cliff for the research center. The ground was made by Tim Wasson.

For the caves I made a bunch of new ice pieces based on a set of tileables I built in Substance Designer. Some pieces were made to be kitbashed together. Others, like the pillars ice samples are drilled from, were designed to stand on their own.

This badass elevator shaft was made by our partners at Airborn. I contributed the ice materials.
